Spate Irrigation Network

We are also in the process of setting up a network of spate irrigation professionals and practioners. The network would exchange experiences and good practices, help upgrade training, identify priority fields for improvement and research and development. Please read the proposal for the Network. Objectives:

• Familiarize policy makers, implementing agencies (NGO’s/ government departments), research agencies and funding agencies with development scope, experiences and practical approaches to spate irrigation development and support
• Document good practices and initiate practical research in spate irrigation
• Disseminate experiences between countries

Activities:

• Preparation and dissemination of guidelines
• Preparation of training material for use in professional curricula – including training of trainers
• Policy visits
• Liaison with research organization and land/water networks
• Organize seminar sessions
• Participate in preparation and reviews of spate irrigation programs
• Maintain website

Structure

• Nodal network in countries to start with Yemen , Pakistan and Eritrea
• Small part-time secretariat to steer (prepare annual workplan) and maintain website and support knowledge exchange and liaise with other organizations
• Two-yearly side-meeting to discuss themes (in particular spate irrigation in context of water resource management/ food security/ poverty alleviation) and activities/ governance of network
• Members and organization subscribe
