Activities
A session was organized to discuss the activities of the Yemen Spate Irrigation Network. The following activities were identified:

Exchange information between organizations working on spate irrigation in Yemen

Exchange of information with other countries

Initiating training events

Undertake case studies
Preference was communication through electronic newsletter and paper newsletter (as nearly half of the members/ trainees have no email address as yet).
Priority themes
The participants were also asked to indicate priority themes – both from a predetermined list and by bringing in their own ideas. Below the number of ‘hits’ per themes is given. There is a particularly large interest in the relation with groundwater recharge; (improved traditional) engineering and related to this water rights issues.

Activities
The secretariat for the Yemen Spate Irrigation Network is hosted by the WEC. Dr. Sharafaddin Salah would be the coordinator for the Yemen Spate Irrigation Network. The following are the proposed initial activities of the Yemen Spate Irrigation Network.

Further build up mailing list/ registration list for the Yemen Spate Irrigation Network

Link priority themes of the Yemen Spate Irrigation Network (see above) with possible research topics under WEC IWRM program and other research programs

Approach members with possible contributions for newsletter (for instance Wadi Hadramawt project on example of designs; IIP on WUA procedures; El Kod on agronomy and post harvesting); German researcher working on Mariib; maybe also approach Hamid on material in Arabic language on spate agronomy in Sudan
- Preparation of second course in Spate Irrigation – focussing on (improved) traditional engineering/ recharge/ use of traditional and modern material
- Undertake fundraising – approaching donors/ funding sources (national and international)
